Fuzhou International Airport, which was opened in June, 1997, is now an important airport in the air route network of China, playing a critical role in external exchanges in the coastal areas of Southeast China. Fuzhou, as a capital city, is the political, economic and cultural center of Fujian Province. Meanwhile, being separated by Taiwan Strait, Fuzhou becomes a door for the cross-strait “Three Direct Links” (i.e. trade, mail and air & shipping services). It is 39 kilometers from Fuzhou International Airport to the downtown and takes about 50 minutes of driving.
At present, Fuzhou International Airport has linked 45 cities (including 3 overseas cities and 3 districts) and opened nearly 50 routes (4 overseas routes and 3 districts). Since the summer and autumn air season in 2009, the flights there have increased to 160 per day, forming an air traffic network starting from Fuzhou and expanding to the whole nation, the East Asia and Southeast Asia areas.
At the level of 4E, Fuzhou International Airport has a runway of 3,600 meters long and 45 meters wide, an apron of 240,000 square meters, a terminal with a total area of 137,000 square meters and an air cargo terminal of 1,750,000 square meters, being able to handle large aircrafts like B747-400 and MD11. The airport’s latest plan is to enhance handling capacity, the yearly passenger throughput reaching 6,500,000, the yearly freight 180,000 tons, per hour passenger throughout reaching 3,000 and freight 60 tons for peak time. In these 13 successive years since 1997, Fuzhou International Airport has been keeping an impressive safety record. In the September of 2009, Fuzhou International Airport ranked high in the evaluation of “National Model Airport” carried out by Civil Aviation Administration and won the honorary title of “National Model Airport” and “National Airport of Best Service Quality”.
